While these batteries provide significant uptime, they still need to be replaced and replacing batteries means buying new ones that cost money and installing them can be a pain. Solar power is a solution, but when it comes to mechanical watches, that can be a bit expensive. Winding the watch also keeps mechanical watches up and running, but since it can add 1-2 days to the life, which can turn out to be a repetitive process. This is why many of the mechanical watches that are sold today are self-winding or automatic.
